Fishing Reports 2008

September

Week 1

August

Week 4

Was invited out with Andrea's Toy with Capt. Fred Gamboa as mate for a tuna trip to the Lobster Claw.  We left the dock near BI at 1am and

arrived at the Claw around 4:15am.  Searched around for awhile and found some nice bait readings.  Dropped the hook and started catching

squid.  Only got 2 live squid but they proved to be just enough.  Got everything set-up by 5am and by 5:15am we had our first fish on... Fish hit

a sardine 100ft down.  Hook pulled after 5 min.  Got re-set and the next rod goes off: Live squid 150ft down.  Took 1.5hr and 6 turns on the rod

to land.  We boated the 62 inch 150lbs Bluefin.  Got the lines in again and another rod goes off.  Again live squid 150 ft down.  We caught and

released this next fish which was around 130lbs.  Bite died around 9:00am as predicted and we headed for the barn.  What a day!!! Thanks Fred.

Week 3

No fishing, spent the weekend in Newport, RI relaxing..

Week 2

Trip 2:  Performed a burial at sea ceremony today.

Trip 1 PM:  Had the Maurer sunset cruise out for a nice evening.  I picked them up at a private house dock and we slowly motored our way

to the protected waters of Silver Bay.  We anchored up and served a great 5 course meal with assorted beverages.  Full moon and great sunset

with occassional fireworks provided great atmosphere.

Trip 1 AM:  Had the Preis charter out for some good fluking.  Based on a report from Capt. Allen on ReelClass we headed north just outside

the Red Church rocks.  Couple of good drifts with a few keepers on each drift.  I then located them very well and we managed a few short

drifts with many 22-24 inch fluke.  Ended the day with 16 keepers with most in the 22-24 inch range.  Great day!!

Week 1

Trip 2:  Had a fluking charter today in not ideal conditions.  Heavy SE wind and rain.  We worked the Axel Carlson Reef for a few keepers.

Moved inshore and manged a few more fish.  Overall a slow day.

Trip 1: Had the Jones charter out for some more inshore Bluefin action.  Today however no Bluefin could be located.  We hammered the

Resor area with no hits.  Marked lots of bait and some fish but could not raise any.  We moved inshore to the Slough where we found

a lot of bait and found out we missed a short tuna bite.  We did manage a few aggressive bluefish.

July

Week 4

Trip 1:  Headed back to the same numbers we had the week before and the tuna were there in full force.  Trolling 6 natural cedar plugs,

among other things, the tuna were all over them. We had many hook-ups and missed hits all day.  We worked a temperature break

from 71 to 73.3 and went from green to blue. In total we boated our limit and enjoyed the beautiful ocean. I called some others guys into

the bite and the small fleet managed probably 25 tuna between us. Some of the best inshore tuna fishing I have seen in a while.

Dinners have been good with seared BFT and customers VERY happy.

Week 3

Trip 2: Today was Bluefin Tuna day!!! Had some of the regulars out today ... Out of BI at 4:30 we entcountered 0-0 fog. Out 9 miles

it lifted as water warmed.  Started trolling on the southern edge of the Fingers.  Bluewater and 73 degrees.  Got to the north end of the fingers

and got a 20 pound Mahi.  Due to sea conditions, we continued north and got south of the Resor Wreck area and we encountered

some 30 pound Bluefin Tuna.  We worked the area for some great tuna action.  Kept our limit and left at 2pm as seas were building

to 4-6ft.  Great trip...

Snacks:  Sourdough Pretzels, salsa and chips

Lunch:  Baby back ribs, Potato salad, coleslaw, fried chicken, turkey and roastbeef hogies with russion dressing

Trip 1: Had a 6 person sunset cruise.  Started at 7pm in a strong south wind but due to the Barnegat Bay inlets and coves we

managed to get out of the wind for dinner.  After some pre-dinner drinks we started serving the follwing food.  Great sunset...

Apps: Salsa and chips, Shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, Chicken Satay

Dinner:  Seared Tuna, Pulled Pork, Spinach Salad, fresh roll

Desset: Homemade blueberry pie

Week 2

Trip 2:  Aboard Andea's Toy Charters with Capt. Fred Gamboa we fished the 100 square of the Hudson Canyon and filmed a

Canadian Fishing show called Peche En Ligne (http://pecheenligne.net/). After a long ride ride out, we started trolling bars and ballyhoo and

had two bites in the afternoon and boated 2 60lb yellowfins and some mahi mahi.  Overnight was slow and the morning troll was slow

as well.  Before heading in, we managed some tilefish for some more footage.  Great trip, thanks Fred.

Trip 1:  Had a charter out today for some fluke fishing.  Conditions were terrible as we had the large swells from Bertha, south wind,

strong north current and cold water temps (61).  We only managed 2 short fluke and 1 skate.  We even tried the Manasquan River with

no luck. All boats I spoke with all reported a very slow day.

Breakfast:  OB-CO's donuts

Snacks:  Seared yellowfin tuna, Homemade salsa, guacamole and chips

Lunch:  Baby back ribs, Potato salad, greek pasta salad, spinach salad

Trip 3:  Bay Charter:  Had Capt. Fred Gamboa out for a family sunset cruise.  Great company and all had a great time.

Trip 2:  Had the Preis charter out for striped bass and fluke fishing.  Left the dock on 0-0 fog.  Snagged bunker outside the inlet and filled

the livewell quickly.  Ran up to the Shrewsbury Rocks area and anchored up and chunked.  No luck.... Made some drifts around and

proceeded to hammer the blues on live bunker.  We managed one bass and a bunch of blues.  Switched over to fluking off Long Branch

and caught one nice 22 incher and several shorts.  Fog was around all day.

Breakfast:  OB-CO's donuts

Snacks:  Seared yellowfin tuna, Chicken Satay

Lunch:  Baby back ribs, Potato salad, greek pasta salad, spinach salad

Dessert: Assortment of candy bars (chilled)

Week 4

Trip 1: Had the Frasco charter out today.  Left MI at 7:00am and snatched a livewell full of bunker outside inlet.  Too many sharks in the pods, so

we decided to go offshore and do some fluking on the hills.  With no drift and no current only a few skates were had.  Moved inshore to Belmar

where a good bass and bluefish were going on.  Drifted live bunker and jigged.  We boated a 40 lbs bass and a mess of bluefish.  The bite was

insane for awhile. A crew member was very sick so we decided the safest thing to do would be go back in the inlet.  We called it a day and went

back to the dock and had a great lunch (see below).

Breakfast:  Sliced canteloupe wrapped in proscuitto

Snacks:  Homemade salsa with chips, seared yellowfin tuna, assorted cheese platter (brie, havarti, gorganzola, mozzarella etc..)

Lunch:  Warm homemade crab cakes with spicy remoulade and fish tacos

Dessert: Assortment of candy bars (chilled)

Week 3

Trip1: Had the Alan Taggart charter out for striped bass.  Deciding to go south based on good reports. Snatched bunker off of Mantoloking and

worked some bunker pods without a touch. Moved off of Seaside Piers but again no takers but marked fish.  Moved down to IBSP but missed the

morning bite.  Finally found some bluefish action 4 miles off Ortley Beach with 5-8 pound blues moving south.  Caught a bunch.  Also had some

excitement as a estimated 200 pound thresher shark slammed a live bunker on the surface.  Had him hooked up for 30 seconds!!!.  What

an exciting site to see him thrash and jumping of the water 30 feet from the boat.  Water temp varied from 58 to 64 degrees.  Tough day.

Breakfast:  Sliced canteloupe, strawberries and pineapple

Snacks:  Homemade salsa, guacamole and chips, seared yellowfin tuna

Lunch:  Assorted sandwiches (roast beef, turkey, veggie), Potato salad, coleslaw, pickles, pesto pasta salad

Dessert: Assortment of candy bars (chilled)

Week 2

Trip 2:  Had Paul S. Charter out for some striped bass fishing.  Out of MI, we immediately had bunker to snatch and qickly filled the livewell.

Went upto to Monmouth beach and anchored up and drifted live bunker and chunks.  Boated 2 bass to 20 pounds and a bunch of bluefish.

After the tide slacked, we worked our way south off of Asbury Park about 3 miles of the beach in 60 ft of water.  We had several runoffs but

none came tight. Water was 67 degress and green.

Breakfast:  Sliced canteloupe, strawberries and pineapple

Snacks:  Chicken Satay with warm peanut sauce; homemade salsa and chips, JUMBO shrimp cocktail

Lunch:  Warm Hawaiian Pulled Pork, Spinach Salad, Fresh rolls, and coleslaw

Dessert: Assortment of candy bars (chilled)

Trip 1: Had my brother Brian out today for some striped bass fishing.  Snatched bunker between Spring Lake Hotel and SRI.  Caught 1 bass

on the snatch rig.  Filled the livewell and headed north.  Didn't find any marks off Long Branch so decided to run to the Shrewsbury Rocks.

Drifted live bunker and picked 1 nice fish with several other runoffs. Worked out way south and found the bunker again off SRI.  Found the

right school and boated 4 nice fish and had some bluefish bites as well. No huge fish today but all nice 25-28 pound fish.  Water temp was 64.5.

Week 1

Had the Petruzzi charter out for some Striped bass fishing.  Leaving in 0-0 fog we motored out of Manasquan and headed north based on

reports.  Located the bunker (in the fog) outside Shark River inlet and snatched a livewell full.  I didn't see any fish in those pods so I moved

north based on another buddy's report of marking fish but not landing any.  We located the fish 200 yards south of the Takanassee Rocks

(Red Church) area.  We drifted live bunker with 5 oz weights and ended up with 4 bass to 35 lbs.  We caught them on live and dead ones

with circle hooks.  Nice healthy fish with fresh sea lice.

PICTURES COMING SHORTLY!!!!

Breakfast:  Sliced canteloupe, strawberries and pineapple

Snacks:  Chicken Satay with warm peanut sauce; homemade salsa and chips, JUMBO shrimp cocktail

Lunch:  Warm Hawaiian Pulled Pork, Spinach Salad, Fresh rolls, and potato salad

May

May 31

Had a crew charter out today with Gabe Lerman.  Snatched bunker in Goose Creek again in the dark and made our way to BI.

Outside the inlet were many pods of bunker, but no bass were had.  After several drifts we started North. More bunker off IBSP and

Ocean Beach but no bass.  Got a call to the Mantoloking Pipe (thanks Fred Andrea's Toy), and drifted bunker for a quick bite.  4 runoffs,

landed 2 @ 28 lbs and lost 2.  Bite was over quickly and we proceeded to work some rock jetties off of Spring Lake.  Many smaller

bass were seen but could not be caught with the large bunkers.  Water clarity was good allowing us to watch these bass and sea bass

swim around the structure. Trip did not have catered food as it was a crew trip.

May 24

Had the Frasco charter today leaving the dock at 5:30 we snatched bunker just infront of the dock.  We loaded the livewell and headed

to BI inlet. We drifted the area we had fish yesterday but no one was home. We tried drifting further north and some bluefish bites.

Moved back south to where we starte, but again no one home. We did have one unusual catch.  20 lbs Monkfish was caught on a

whole live bunker. Very tasty fish.  Windy today with NW 15-20 in the morning relaxing to 5-10, water temp 56.

Breakfast:  Sliced canteloupe, strawberries and pineapple

Snacks:  Chicken Satay with warm peanut sauce; homemade salsa and chips

Lunch:  Roasted turkey and roastbeef, swiss cheese, coleslaw and russian dressing on rye, sour cream potato salad

pickles, spinach salad with walnut dressing

May 23

Had the Preis charter out for some striped bass fishing.  Leaving the dock early we entered the ocean in grey light. We tried

to locate the bunker schools for first few hours with no luck.  Drifted the north jetty with fresh dead bunker.  We then found some

bunker schools and snatched  a livewell full.  We drifted an area just south of Inlet channel in 45 ft of water.  Total of 7 runoffs and landed

two fish.  One at 20 lbs and one at ~40lbs.  Windy today with NW 15-25, water temp 55.

we put the spoons in on the near shore rocks. Caught most of the bass on small white bunker spoons.  Fish ranged from

35 to 40 inches.  Water temp 54 and green.  Bite was over by 9:00, giving us time to enjoy some of the food provided
